I started in OpenSpace in 2017 with a few trusted partners. After 16 years of working from home as a project manager, working with remotely was nice, but I missed meeting with people every day. Working remotely is great you can communicate with teams working across different time-zones and countries, but it is nice to see them in person and have casual conversations. Working alone or from home can become isolating. Remote work can feel like your interactions are chopped up and focused more on the task than the person. Being able to bump into someone "at the water cooler" wasn't even possible, and even though those things can also be distracting or take up a lot of time, I am learning those short 1:1 interactions can be really helpful.
So my wife and I took some money we set aside for investing and used it as seed money to start OpenSpace.
I've found co-working to be helpful in my motivation, focus and finding the basic support of others. It's way more flexible than I had imagined or experienced as a DayPass drop in user in co-working spaces I had visited. As a visiter you don't develop the same sense of a space or it's community.
I have come to realize that the benefits of co-working aren't limited by physical location either. From the beginning I met friends from all over that would meet virtually. I had experienced that with remote work with my project management job, but this was different. So expanding to virtual coworking seemed like a natural move. I created both in office options and virtual ways for people to connect to the community when they were traveling. I was surpised to find people joining our online community from all over the world. I wasn't the only one missing accountability and support of embodied by the coworking mindset.
We work and make progress on our goals, check up on each other and just keep each other company. (Check out the virtual-co-working community here at (myworkhive-coworking.slack.com)
